Mulder and Scully sat in her apartment pouring through the piles of flight manifests they were going over for their current case. It was a long, tedious process and they had finally decided to order in a pizza: it was going to be a long night.
Scully sat over on the couch under a lamp looking over a pile of papers. She peeked over at Mulder sitting on her couch, playing absent-mindedly with his bottom lip as he went over a file. She was a consummate professional, and prided herself on that fact. But on occasion the woman in her could not ignore the feelings her partner had the ability to raise in her. That first day when they'd met, she thought casually that he was cute, and in spite of his acrimonious nature, he intrigued her. But over the past two years she came to realize there was so much more to him; so much she admired and respected: his dedication, his brilliance, his passion, and his wonderful sense of humor. She found her self growing more and more fond of him with each passing day, and sometimes longed to be closer; to have him touch her in that way that only two people who are truly intimate with each other can. He didn't help matters: He had no idea how he teased her with that mischievous smile, that penetrating gaze, the occasional touches that sent her head spinning, the way his voice would sometimes drop to a whisper as he talked to her like they were the only two people in the world. And he always had to stand so damn close.
Scully pulled herself from these thoughts. She was being ridiculous. He was her partner; he was her friend; and he had absolutely no interest in her. She laughed inwardly at herself for feeling like a shy school girl who fawned over the class rogue. She turned back to her file and was soon absorbed in it.
Mulder grew bored with the papers in front of him and his eyes started to protest against the stress he was putting them under. He rubbed them wearily and glanced over at Scully. The corner of his mouth turned up ever so slightly as he watched her. Sometimes she thouroughly bemused him, and he thought to himself how much warmth he felt for this woman, his friend. But sometimes it scared him: attraction was one thing- a matter of lust, affection another- a matter of friendship. But together, they were a dangerous combination-- and a very serious, entirely different matter.
She looked so somber sitting there now, studying the papers in front of her. She reached for her soda to take a sip, but too absorbed in the file, the straw missed her mouth and poked her chin. Mulder's faint smile widened into a full grin. She jerked, finally pulling her eyes from the manifests, and took a drink. An overwhelming feeling of affection spread through him and Mulder thought to himself how absolutely adorable she was. He studied her for a minute, then watched her with a sudden fascination as it occurred to him how thoroughly sexy she looked in her casual, baggy clothes: a big blue shirt hanging loosely off her shoulder exposed the strap of a tank style tee underneath, jeans that were just a little too long for those petite legs. Her hair fell loosely around her face as she played with the corner of her glasses. The light above her illuminated her hair, creating a coppery halo around her face. She reached for her piece of pizza and took a bite. As she pulled it away from her mouth, a long strand of cheese stretched from her lips to the slice in her hand. Unaware of her silent observer, and with her eyes still on the file, she tilted her head up slightly and attempted to guide the stubborn string into her mouth with her tongue.
Mulder's mouth fell open as he watched her. And it hit him like a ton of bricks: he was unmistakably, undeniably, completely turned on.
He would never know where the courage came from, but there he was moving slowly to sit next to her, his mind screaming at him to turn back around and sit down, his hormones driving him towards her. He sat next to her, one arm resting on the back of the couch. Still struggling with the cheese, she froze to look at him, raising her eyebrows quizzically. His mouth was curled up ever so slightly in a smile that was almost....devilish. Mulder coiled his finger around the middle of the bridge of cheese, breaking it loose, and began slowly winding it around his finger to her mouth. He paused at her bottom lip. She hesitated as a million thoughts ran through her mind in a matter of seconds. Then, not knowing what on earth possessed her, she took his finger in her mouth and drew the cheese off of it. As her lips and tongue passed over his finger, a lighting bolt of raw desire shot through him and his entire body was instantly catapulted into a state of arousal. She could see his breathing alter visably. His hand hovered at her chin, his finger still wet with her saliva, as he began to run it slowly back and forth against her bottom lip. Her mouth opened slightly as they looked at each other, the thoughts racing through their minds. He removed her glasses. The slice of pizza she was holding fell from her hand back onto her plate as he leaned in cautiously to kiss her. Scully was unable to move as he headed for her; she was drawn to him like no other. His kiss burned with fire and she let her arms move up to encircle his neck. Her soft tongue sliding through his lips was more than he could bare; he slipped her shirt over her head, leaving her in her tank-top and jeans. He moved for her jeans with building intensity, sliding them off as his lips teased her ear. She pulled herself to him and knelt over him. He held her face as she unbuttoned his shirt, then let his hands slip down her neck, her back, to the soft curves of her waist. She freed him from the buttons of his jeans before her hands moved to caress his stomach, his chest. One hand resting at the small of her back, the other slid up her shirt to the soft flesh underneath. He guided her to him with careful determination, checking his own urge to simply throw her down on the couch and ravish her. The slightest moan escaped him as he found her, her presence coming over him like a gentle fog. He wrapped his arms around her, tightening his hold as he moved deep within in her until they both were swept away in a torrent of rapture.
Afterwards, he sat there with his head back on the couch while she lay collapsed on top of him. Their breathing slowed, exhaustion sweeping over them. He hugged her tightly as a smile spread across his face. She buried her face in his neck, the warmth and smell of him beckoning her to sleep. Feeling drowsy himself, Mulder lay her back on the couch and stretched out next to her, propping his head up on his hand as he looked down at her. But she could not find sleep; her thoughts troubled her. He took her hand, caressing it, interlocking his fingers with hers as he asked "What's on your mind?"
"Where do we go from here, Mulder?" she asked.
"Forward. You're my friend, Scully, that hasn't changed. Now we're just...." he searched to find the right words.
"'Intimate Partners'?" she asked with a smirk.
"Intimate friends" he responded seriously. "We haven't thrown anything away, Scully, we've just moved to a different level."
Silence as she considered this, then she worried "But what if the Bureau finds out...."
"Who cares if the Bureau finds out? And besides, they won't."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because we're too good at what we do" he asserted forcefully. His eyes clouded over as he watched her, trying to assess her feelings. "What are you thinking, Scully? Do you think this was a mistake--"
"No, no absolutely not" she assured him, raising a hand to touch his face.
He took her hand and bestowed a kiss on it. "Good, 'cause I wouldn't give you up so easily anyway" he teased. His face turned serious as he continued: "Well... there's one thing we *can* be certain of."
Her brows knitted together in concern at his tone. She looked at him with apprehension.
"We'll never look at pizza the same way again" he said with a smile.
And then she was laughing.
